Recently spottings of the Google Street View car at the beginning of March 2024 has been seen circulating around the metropolitan area of Quito, but unlike past updates, Google in collaboration with Aneta, a local company dedicated to transportation, are using a Gen 4 Pickup.
This is the second time Google has used a pickup to photograph a Latin American country, the first being Panama during 2023. Additionally, it is possible that some of the coverage done with low quality cameras will be replaced using this new setup to record images.
Ecuador would receive the same treatment as Bangladesh and Sri Lanka, where Google and several local companies originally used low quality cameras to photograph the country during 2021 and were later replaced by Gen 4 cameras.
Additionally, this is the first time where Google decided to take the step of replacing normal coverage done by a few cars with pickups. Ecuador was originally covered by gen 3 cameras between 2014 and 2015, but unfortunately the first attempts to update the coverage were made by low quality cameras during 2023, but according to reports from netizens based in Ecuador, Google finally decided to opt for the use of these setups.
The author of the first spottings found on Twitter confirmed that the Gen 4 car was parked near Mirador San Juan in the Independencia neighborhood, Southwest Quito. (Source: Tweet)
