The Khanh Hoa Museum (Vietnamese: Bảo tàng Khánh Hòa) is an ethnographic museum located in the south-central section of the Vietnamese coast, is dedicated to exhibiting artifacts of the province's ethnic minorities as well as archaeological sites such as Hòa Diêm.

History

The museum was established in June 1979 through decisions of the Provincial People's Committee in an old house of French architecture built in the 20th Early Century, originally the museum was intended to store history of the former Phú Khánh province, but after the territorial changes of Vietnam, it became the provincial museum of Khánh Hòa.[1]

The museum was supported by the Vietnam Institute of Archaeology and Japanese archaeologists for excavations at burial sites around Hòa Diêm near Cam Ranh City in the south of the province.[2] For the Dragon Year celebrations in 2024, the provincial museum organized thematic exhibitions about the province's prehistoric archaeology, showcasing artifacts found at the sites of Xóm Cồn, Văn Tứ Đông and Vĩnh Yên.[3]

Collections

The museum exhibits over 300 collections on ethnic minorities in the South Central and Central Highlands including a series of photographs, documents and ethnographic objects.[4]

The museum has traditional instruments used by ethnic minorities in Vietnam such as Bộ Mã La, a type of gong sets as well as bronze drums.[5] Part of the museum exhibits showcase the culture of Raglai communities, including information about farming, hunting and fishing practices as well as crafts making.[6]

The museum has a collection of Dong Son bronze drums (Vietnamese: Trống đồng Đông Sơn) that were previously excavated around the Nha Trang and Ninh Hoa area, some of these dating back to archaeological excavations in the 1980s.[7] The museum also has collections on sculpture found in Ponagar Temple (Vietnamese: Tháp Bà Ponagar).[8]
