The Bou-Saâda Nasr Eddine Dinet National Museum (Arabic: المتحف العمومي الوطني ناصر الدين ديني) is a museum located in the central part of Algeria, dedicated to showcase arts depicting the local culture of the region, displaying works of native artists as well as foreigners who settled in the city of Bou-Saâda.

History

The museum contains several works by the French painter Nasr Ed Dine, known as Étienne Dinet before he converted to Islam; much of his work was based on depictions of Algerian civilization as well as Islam. Dine had previously traveled to Saudi Arabia with Sliman Ben Ibrahim, an Algerian essayist and writer, in order to perform the Hajj, the pilgrimage to Mecca. When the painter died, his body was later buried in his mortuary Qubba in the city of Bou-Saada, then in 1993, the Nasr Eddine Dinet Museum was officially opened in the same city.[1]

The museum was specifically inaugurated in May 18 to honor International Museum Day in Algeria. It is housed in a traditional Arab house in the Lamouine district, which was owned by the painter's family. Part of the museum's rooms are devoted to his work, as well as others that display the contributions of various Algerian artists to the visual arts, including Aïcha Haddad (Arabic: عائشة حداد), Ali Khodja (Arabic: علي خوجة), and M'hamed Asiakhem (Arabic: محمد إيسياخم).[2]

Collections

The museum has received several donations from national Algerian museums to transfer Dinet's works to Bou-Saâda, having a collection of 12 authentic paintings on permanent display.[3] The museum was initially supported by the Algerian artist Mohamed Racim, the museum also acquired several works by the Belgian painter Edouard Verschaffelt depicting life in central Algeria.[4]

The museum also contains several books written by Dinet such as Special Rays of the Light of Islam (Arabic: أشعة خاصة بنور الإسلام) and The East as seen by the West (Arabic: الشرق كما يراه الغرب).[5]
